Reading
Reading is at the centre of everything we do at Sutton Courtenay CofE Primary. We believe that strong reading underpins all learning and is fundamental to pupils’ success, imagination, and lifelong enjoyment of books. Our pupils are exposed to high‑quality texts in a variety of meaningful ways: through their writing curriculum, class novels, the school library, and carefully chosen reading‑for‑pleasure opportunities.
High‑quality, diverse, and inclusive texts are woven throughout the curriculum, ensuring that all pupils see themselves reflected in the books they read while also learning about the lives, cultures, and experiences of others. From Nursery through to Year 6, book talk is a consistent and valued part of classroom life. Children are encouraged to discuss texts, share opinions, make connections, and develop a rich vocabulary through regular, purposeful dialogue about reading.
We are proud of our Reading Ambassadors, who play a key role in promoting a love of books across the school. They lead and support book‑related events such as World Book Day and storytelling weeks, deliver assemblies, and act as enthusiastic role models for reading. In addition, pupil‑led, book‑focused lunchtime clubs provide further opportunities for children to explore texts, recommend books, and celebrate reading together.
Through access to a rich and varied range of texts, we actively promote a love of reading for pleasure alongside the development of essential reading skills. Our reading curriculum supports pupils in developing fluency, strong comprehension, and the ability to engage critically and thoughtfully with literature, equipping them with skills that extend well beyond the classroom.
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”— Dr. Seuss
